The role of AGROBIO in OrganicClimateNET project involves serving as the National Coordinator in Portugal, making it responsible for guiding a group of farmers interested in learning about and implementing innovative techniques that benefit both the environment and the community. AGROBIO oversees and coordinates a group of approximately 20 farmers, divided into two ‘hubs,’ where they collaborate to identify the best strategies for sustainable farm management.
Despite Portugal’s relatively small size, the country exhibits significant orographic variability and a wide range of climatic conditions. This diversity results in considerable differences in the types of crops and farming practices between the northern and southern regions. As a result, hubs have been strategically selected by geographical regions to achieve greater uniformity in agricultural sectors. In the northern hub of Portugal, the focus is primarily on horticulture, orchards, and vineyards, while the southern hub concentrates on animal production and cereal cultivation. This regional separation enables more effective support for farmers by tailoring techniques and knowledge to the local context, allowing them to better understand and more easily replicate these approaches on their farms and within their communities.
“With AGROBIO’s collaboration in the project, we aim to contribute to the creation of a more sustainable and resilient future, where knowledge and collaboration are the pillars of the ecological transition in agriculture.”
About AGROBIO
As a pioneering association and NGO for organic farming in Portugal, AGROBIO’s mission is to promote organic farming throughout the country and to strengthen the support and technical knowledge required by farmers and aspiring farmers for transitioning to more sustainable practices. AGROBIO aims to raise awareness among young people and stakeholders about European strategies for ecological transition and climate change mitigation, establish a network of awareness centers for carbon farming in partner countries, and develop interactive activities that facilitate knowledge sharing among farmers, youth, and other stakeholders. AGROBIO’s commitment to advancing initiatives for ecological transition and climate action aligns with the goals of the OrganicClimateNET Project, which it views as an ideal platform to continue its efforts in driving positive environmental change.
“The project allows us to get even closer to the farmer, to share new techniques and knowledge, thus giving farmers more tools to be able to make this transition.”
