In the low hills of southern Spain, olive trees stand as symbols of endurance and tradition. But today, these ancient groves are also becoming powerful allies in the fight against climate change. Thanks to Organic Climate Farming, olive farming is evolving and preserving its cultural roots while embracing sustainable innovation.

Organic Olives with a Climate-Positive Twist

Organic Climate Farming is not just about eliminating synthetic inputs—it’s about re-thinking the role of farming in the face of environmental challenges. In the Spanish olive sector, this means introducing regenerative practices that enhance the ecosystem while continuing to produce one of the Mediterranean’s most iconic foods.

Techniques such as cover cropping between olive rows, minimal tillage, and the use of organic compost are helping to increase soil fertility, enhance biodiversity, and most importantly, sequester atmospheric carbon in the ground. These practices contribute to the resilience of the olive trees, enabling them to better withstand droughts and extreme temperatures—conditions that are becoming all too common in southern Europe.

From Soil Health to Climate Resilience

Healthy soil is the cornerstone of Organic Climate Farming. In olive groves, improved soil structure and organic matter content not only capture and store carbon, but also enhance water retention, reduce erosion, and support microbial life—all crucial factors for long-term productivity and environmental sustainability.

Moreover, the preservation of native flora between tree rows and the avoidance of chemical pesticides encourages the habitat of a rich diversity of pollinators and beneficial insects, contributing to a balanced and self-sustaining ecosystem.

Our Role in a Growing Network

Through our involvement in initiatives like OrganicClimateNET, we are actively working to support olive producers in adopting these climate-smart practices. Spain, as one of the leading producers of organic olive oil in Europe, plays a vital role in this transformation. By sharing knowledge, coordinating training sessions, and connecting farmers across regions, we are helping to build a more resilient, interconnected agricultural network landscape.

Every olive tree cultivated under these principles becomes not “just food”, but rather becomes a climate solution.

Organic Climate Farming is not just a trend—it’s a commitment. One that ensures our olive groves continue to thrive, not just for today, but for generations to come.
